Depilatory cream and cold wave lotion both rely on thioglycolate salts breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin — but they’re solving completely different problems. Depilatory cream aims to fully dissolve the hair shaft. Cold wave lotion aims to temporarily loosen the hair’s internal structure just enough to reshape it around a roller, then lock the new shape in place with a neutralizer.
