What Is Calcium Thioglycolate?
Calcium thioglycolate (CAS 814-71-1; INCI name: Calcium Thioglycolate) is the active ingredient in depilatory creams. It works by breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin — the structural protein that makes up hair — causing the hair shaft to weaken and dissolve at or just below the skin surface within minutes of application.
Compared to sodium thioglycolate and potassium thioglycolate, the calcium salt form offers a more stable pH profile and is widely used in cosmetic-grade depilatory formulations approved under EU Regulation No 1223/2009 and accepted under the US MoCRA framework.
