You don’t need a design degree to get this right. You do need to know what’s legally required, what jar options actually make sense, and how to avoid the mistakes that delay a launch.

What’s Actually Required

The Non-Negotiable Parts of Your Label
Before thinking about colors and fonts, get the required content locked down — this is the part that determines whether your product can legally be sold, not just whether it looks good.
REQUIRED LABEL ELEMENTS
01Product name / identity (what it is, e.g., “Depilatory Cream”)
02Net quantity (e.g., “150g / 5.3 fl oz”)
03Full ingredient list, INCI names, descending order by weight
04Responsible person name and address
05Usage warnings (patch test instruction, max contact time)
Requirements vary slightly by market — see our EU/US/China regulatory overview or MoCRA guide for market-specific details.
Jar Selection
What Container Options Actually Make Sense
PP (polypropylene) jars with an inner seal are the standard for depilatory cream — they’re chemically compatible with the formulation, hold up well, and are cost-effective at the volumes a first-time brand typically orders.
GOOD DEFAULT CHOICES
- Standard PP jar with inner seal + screw lid
- Frosted or opaque finish (protects formula from light)
- Simple wraparound or front-facing label
SAVE FOR LATER (SCALE-UP)
- Custom-molded jar shapes
- Embossed or foil-stamped branding
- Airless pump dispensers
Custom molds and premium finishes come with their own minimum order quantities and lead times, usually far higher than what makes sense for a first batch. Start standard, upgrade once you’ve validated demand.
Designing the Label
You Don’t Need an Agency for a First Launch
A clean, simple label with the required information laid out clearly will outperform an elaborate design that’s hard to read or missing required elements. Tools like Canva have cosmetic label templates sized for common jar dimensions, which is a reasonable starting point if you don’t have design experience or budget for a designer yet.
What actually matters most: legible font size for the ingredient list (this is often the first thing that gets flagged in review, on TikTok Shop or elsewhere), a clear front-facing product name, and enough contrast between text and background that it’s readable in a phone photo, not just on your screen.
Getting It Printed

From Design File to Physical Label
Once your design is finalized, you’ll typically send a print-ready file (vector PDF or high-resolution AI/EPS file) to a label printer, who can produce roll or sheet labels at the quantities matching your batch size. For a Starter Batch of 100-200 units, most local or online label printers can turn this around within a week or two.

FAQ
Common Questions
What information is legally required on a depilatory cream label?
At minimum: product identity, net quantity, full ingredient list in INCI naming, responsible person name and address, and required usage warnings such as patch test instructions. Requirements vary slightly by target market.
Do I need a graphic designer for my first label?
Not necessarily. Simple designs using tools like Canva with cosmetic label templates work for a first launch, as long as all required information is included and legible. A designer becomes more valuable as you scale.
What jar material is standard for this product?
PP (polypropylene) jars with an inner seal are standard — chemically compatible with the formulation, cost-effective, and widely available in the 100g-200g range.
