What Goes Into a Depilatory Cream Formula
Depilatory cream looks simple — a white cream in a jar — but each component plays a specific role. Understanding this helps you evaluate suppliers, answer customer questions credibly, and recognise a well-formulated product versus a cut-corner one.
The Active Ingredient — Calcium Thioglycolate
This is what actually removes the hair. Calcium thioglycolate breaks the disulfide bonds holding keratin (hair’s structural protein) together, causing the hair shaft to weaken and dissolve at the skin surface. Typical active concentration in finished cream ranges from 3–4.5% (as thioglycolic acid), within the 5% limit permitted under EU Regulation No. 1223/2009 for consumer products.
The pH Buffer System
Thioglycolate only works efficiently at a high, alkaline pH — typically 11.5–12.5. Alkaline agents (commonly calcium hydroxide) maintain this range throughout the product’s shelf life. Get this wrong and the cream either doesn’t work fast enough, or becomes unstable and loses effectiveness before the expiry date.
Thickening Agents
Fatty alcohols and waxes (such as cetearyl alcohol) give the cream its texture — thick enough to stay in place on skin without dripping, but spreadable enough to apply evenly. This also affects how long the cream stays in contact with hair, which directly impacts efficacy.
Water (Aqueous Base)
The primary carrier for the formula, typically making up the largest percentage by weight. Water quality and purity matter for both stability and microbial safety — this is one reason a controlled manufacturing environment matters more than it might seem.
Fragrance
Thioglycolate compounds have a characteristic sulfurous odour. Fragrance is added not just for consumer appeal but to make the product usable — an unmasked formula would be noticeably unpleasant. This is one of the more customisable elements of a formula, within stability limits.
