Depilatory cream and cold wave lotion both rely on thioglycolate salts breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin — but they’re solving completely different problems. Depilatory cream aims to fully dissolve the hair shaft. Cold wave lotion aims to temporarily loosen the hair’s internal structure just enough to reshape it around a roller, then lock the new shape in place with a neutralizer.
This difference in goal is exactly why the two product categories use different pH ranges, different salts, and different processing times — even though the underlying chemistry family is the same.

We manufacture calcium thioglycolate and formulate it into depilatory cream base — this is where the calcium salt is the standard, well-established active ingredient. We are not positioning calcium thioglycolate as a substitute for ammonium thioglycolate in perm lotion formulations; that would require dedicated formulation development we haven’t undertaken.
