Calcium, sodium, potassium, and ammonium thioglycolate are all salts of thioglycolic acid. They share the same fundamental mechanism: breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin, the structural protein in hair. This is what allows depilatory creams to dissolve hair and what allows cold wave lotions to restructure it.

But the salt you choose is not interchangeable. Each has a different pH behavior, odour intensity, and typical application — and picking the wrong one for your product category creates real formulation problems.

The Case for Calcium Thioglycolate in Hair Removal Products

Depilatory creams operate at a higher pH (typically 11.5–12.5) than hair waving products, and need to remain stable in that range for the duration of their shelf life. Calcium thioglycolate holds this pH range more consistently than sodium or potassium salts, which reduces the risk of formulation drift over the product’s 24-month shelf life.

The odour difference matters commercially too. Ammonium thioglycolate — while effective — has a much stronger sulfurous smell, which is one reason it’s associated more with professional cold wave/perm treatments (done in a salon, ventilated, single-use) than with a consumer product sitting in someone’s bathroom for weeks.

Formulator’s note: If you’re developing a new depilatory cream and currently formulating with a different thioglycolate salt, switching to calcium thioglycolate is not a drop-in substitution. You’ll need to re-run pH stability and efficacy testing at your target concentration before finalising the formula.
